Dr. Daniel Kirschenbaum, one of the world’s most established and well published experts on sport psychology and weight loss, created the Center for Behavioral Medicine (CBM) in 1984. Chicago CBM started as a clinic within Northwestern University Medical School, where Dr. Kirschenbaum continues to serve as Professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences. Chicago CBM has thrived for 25 years because its programs really work. We offer state of the science approaches for:
CBM’s Approach
CBM therapists use knowledge of psychology (the science of behavior), biology, and medicine to help children, adolescents, and adults lead healthier, more productive, and more satisfying lives.
Each program begins with an in-depth assessment. Then, a treatment plan is recommended, usually consisting of individual, small group, or family cognitive-behavior therapy conducted by professionals. Within the context of a supportive relationship, participants use skills such as goal-setting, planning, problem-solving, stress managements, and positive focusing to improve the quality of their lives. They are also helped to mobilize a network of support to help them change.
Staff
The Center’s staff has published 10 books and well over 100 articles in professional journals on weight loss, sport performance, and related topics. In addition, the Center’s Director is also Clinical Director for Wellspring.
Wellspring is the largest provider of treatment services for overweight young people and their families in the United States. Wellspring offers 11 camps and two boarding schools. Wellspring’s programs have been featured in hundreds of stories in the media.
